Why we built a personal stylist for the AI era

The average adult spends roughly 90 hours a year deciding what to wear. That's two full work weeks gone — usually with the same conclusion: the gray sweatshirt, again. It isn't a lack of options. Most of us own more clothes than we'll wear in a year. We're paralyzed by them.
I built Tailr because the existing options don't actually solve this. Personal stylists cost $200 a session and treat you like a research project. Pinterest is a mood board, not an action plan. Retail AI — “customers who bought X also bought Y” — is a recommendation engine, not a stylist. None of them answer the real question: given everything I own, the weather, and where I'm going today, what should I wear?
The wrong way to build this
The obvious way to build an AI stylist in 2026 is to scrape every fashion photo on the internet, fine-tune a model, and ship a chatbot. That's the wrong way. Three reasons:
- Taste doesn't generalize. The training data is an average, and averages are boring. The model learns to suggest the safest possible look — a generic baseline that fits no one well.
- It doesn't know your closet. So every recommendation is a shopping suggestion. The interesting question — what to do with what you already own — never gets asked.
- Your data goes somewhere. Most consumer-AI fashion products train on your inputs and sell ads against your behavior. We chose to do neither.
What Tailr actually does
We start with your Style DNA — a 14-step wizard that captures how you actually dress, what you want to project, what fits you, and what you avoid. Five minutes. We then use it as a strict styling brief for a large language model, with the wardrobe you've added as the first-choice catalog and 1,000+ brand partners as the fallback for any missing pieces.
Tailr's edge isn't the model. It's the brief, the catalog, and the rules we never let an outfit break.
A compose runs in roughly ten seconds. Strict server-side checks run on every result before it reaches you: nothing without a real product image, no swimwear at non-water occasions, no wool topcoats at 80°F. A multi-layer gender filter prevents the cross-catalog mix-ups that have plagued every retail AI we've seen.
What we won't build
We won't train on your data. We won't sell your data. We won't run advertising. We won't pretend the AI is infallible — every suggestion can be regenerated, edited, or ignored, and the high-stakes occasions (interviews, weddings, anywhere with a dress code) always warrant your judgment over the model's.
What we will do: ship every week, publish what we change, and let you take your data with you the moment you're done with us.
Where we're going
1,000 brands. iOS app for App Store. Better fabric/season modeling. A second-language version. Eventually, the Style DNA becomes portable — a fashion identity you can carry to any brand or marketplace that wants to style you well instead of just sell to you.
